This past weekend I went to see the Founder, a movie about the man behind the origins of McDonald’s fast food empire staring Michael Keaton.
★ ★ ★ SPOILER ALERT★ ★ ★ Be advised this post describes some scenes from the movie.
The movie is based on a true story and about the life of Ray Kroc, a struggling salesman from Illinois. Ray met two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation during the 1950’s in Southern California.
Ray Kroc was extremely impressed by the McDonald brothers’ speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. He ingeniously positioned himself to be able to acquire the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire known as McDonald’s.
Basically he stole it from them right under their noses!!!
Who Should See The Founder Movie?
I highly recommend that you go see the Founder if are a business owner or if you call yourself an entrepreneur. Make it a family night and take the kids too. There are some incredible lessons that we can all learn from this story.
In the movie, Ray had apparently been a salesman for some time, 17 years I think. People and businesses around town new him from trying to sell them one product or another.
In 1954 Ray met the McDonald brothers in San Berdino, California while he was a traveling milkshake machine salesman. The McDonald brothers had ordered an unusually high number of milkshake machines from Kroc so they were actually Ray’s clients.
The milkshake machines that he sold were top of the line and made five shakes at a time designed to be fast and increase restaurant efficiency.
Kroc, a high-school dropout, was so impressed with the McDonald brothers operation that he volunteered to partner with them in order to franchise the McDonald brother’s restaurant.
TOP 5 LESSONS LEARNED
Here are the top five lessons I learned from watching the Founder.
1) PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF
I think if you are a true entrepreneur you can not come out of this movie without being inspired by Kroc’s persistence (portrayed by actor Michael Keaton).
Ray Kroc believed persistence was the key to success. Well persistence, and some not so cool business practices.
Nevertheless, Ray was super committed and determined to keep going until he got it right, despite the numerous challenges and obstacles he faced as a husband, salesman, opportunist and entrepreneur.
One of my favorite lines from the movie
I know what you’re thinking…how the heck does a 52 year old, over the hill milkshake machine salesman build a fast food empire with 1600 restaurants at an annual revenue of 700 million dollars…one word…PERSISTENCE!” Ray Kroc
With unwavering persistence Ray Kroc, changed his life and the world. So the message I got from the movie was that persistence pays.
2) HAVE A VISION
As an entrepreneur you must have a vision. It’s something that you work toward without any sense of when it will be fully realized, perhaps never.
An ambitious man with a singular vision can be a powerful thing.
Ray saw the incredible potential of the McDonald brother’s restaurant. He envisioned opening McDonald’s restaurants all across the country and the people coming to McDonald’s 24/7 days a week.
His vision was much bigger than the McDonald brothers who were content with just being a successful local restaurant. The McDonald brothers were focused on just their product – hamburgers but Ray saw beyond that, he saw the unlimited business potential.
He eventually convinced the brothers to see his vision and expand through franchisees.

Here is that exact scene from the movie that won over the McDonald brothers…
3) LOOK FOR WAYS TO MORE EFFICIENT, BE AN INNOVATOR
To his credit, Kroc keeps looking for ways to improve what the McDonald brothers started. They, in turn, are loath to make any changes to what they understandably see as a winning formula.
This was the downfall of the McDonald’s brothers. When you are the entrepreneur or business that refuses to innovate you risk no longer being competitive and eventually you will lose great business partners/leaders who will break away from you and go align themselves with other people and businesses that appreciate what they bring to the table.
Ray Kroc believed the McDonald’s business needed to innovate to remain competitive and grow but the McDonald’s brothers were happy with the status quo.
In the beginning the McDonald brothers brought efficiency by innovating assembly line operations for their restaurant. Later, Kroc introduced standardization, automation and discipline.
As a business owner you can not be afraid to be innovative or find new ways to accomplish things. Learn to embrace and use today’s technology.
4) DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE RISKS
I think too many people never reach their full potential in life because they are too afraid to take any risks.
Entrepreneurs are problem solvers and risk takes at their core.
When Ray Kroc saw the potential of the McDonald brothers restaurant and he went all in. Short on cash, he even mortgaged his home just to strike a deal to franchise the brothers operation. Talk about risky!
Kroc was able to get a few franchises up and running before going through some other significant financial challenges. Kroc was struggling to make the business profitable and was on the verge of losing it all when he met Harry Sonneborn, a financial expert, at the bank.
Sonneborn gave him a new perspective, “Ray you’re not in the food-service business, you’re in the real-estate business.”
Sonneborn showed him a new way of making money off the deal with McDonald brothers on selling hamburgers and franchisees. This new way involved creating a real estate company that would buy up (or lease) the land on which all McDonald’s would be located.
The company would then sublease to the franchisee who would run the restaurant. Sonneborn further developed the plan to eventually take out mortgages to own both the building and the land.
Problem solved!
5) IT’S NEVER TO LATE TO START
It’s truly amazing to see how a 50-year-old turned an idea into a global empire with many ups and down is truly extraordinary.
Kroc was a high school drop out and had been in the sales industry for most of his life. He struggled to keep food on the table.
In just six years of working with the McDonald brothers and finding their ambition ultimately falling short of his own, Ray bought them out and became the owner of McDonald’s Corporation in 1961.
It really doesn’t matter how old you are, you can start a business, open a franchise and still be successful in a short period of time.
As long as you have a vision, are persistent, determined and committed to your success eventually you can over come any obstacle and see your lifelong dreams come true!
There are probably several more lessons I can take away from this movie some good some bad but I think you get the point.
McDonald’s is a great case study on scaling, franchising and building a brand.
I personally think ‘The Founder’ was an incredible film and a must watch –especially for the young aspiring entrepreneurs.

It could be your marketing plan.
WHAT….you don’t have a marketing plan?
Well don’t panic because most entrepreneurs and small business owners do not.
However, if you want to take your business to the next level you must create a marketing plan.
A well designed marketing plan will help you reach your business goals much quicker, generate more leads faster and make more sales easier.
Without a marketing plan chances are you will struggle to make sales no matter how “Amazing” of a product or service you have!
My marketing plan is simple.
I use a 3 step formula to make more sales.
It‘s called the B. E. S formula or Build, Engage and Sell formula.
This formula has been time tested and is used by the top influencers and leaders in multiple industries.
If you want to become a 6 or 7 figure earner in your niche then follow this formula.
Which step do you believe is more important? Which step do most people concentrate on?
I will reveal the answers at the end of this post.
STEP 1: Build Your Audience
The very first step is to build an audience.
How can you sell a product or service to someone that has no idea who you are?
You can’t!
The main benefit of building an audience is marketing.
Once you have an audience you can market your products and services to them. This is why it is extremely important that you build an audience as soon as possible.
And just so you know, this is not something that will happen over night. It takes time. However building an audience is critical to your long term success.
Here are some ways to build an audience
Email list
Use popular social media platforms:
Facebook,
Twitter,
YouTube,
Linkedin,
Instagram,
Snapchat,
Pinterest
Blog
SECRET TIP: Email is the KEY to building an audience. Using your website and social media to attract visitors and followers, and then encouraging them to sign up for your email list gives you the opportunity to contact your prospects at any point in the future, with any kind of messaging you want; and you’re not bound by search engine rankings or social media algorithms.
When it comes down to it, your email list is one of the only online assets that you have 100% control over. Borrowed audiences from other sources such as social media (Facebook, Twitter YouTube) change too often which massively affects your content distribution and engagement. You’ll always be at the mercy of new and changing algorithms
STEP 2: Engage Your Audience
The purpose of this step is to build our relationship with our audience or followers.
I think one of the big reasons that people don’t succeed in network marketing is because they don’t spend any time building rapport and trust with the people they want buying from them.
Engage your audience = communicate with your audience.
As you build your audience it is very important that you engage or communicate with them by sharing value in the form of content that will keep them engaged with you.
Here are some ways to engage your audience
There are a lot of ways you can build an audience. For example you can:
Blogging
Post frequent updates on your social media platforms like:
Facebook – status updates, images, videos, LIVES
Twitter – tweet images, videos
YouTube – videos
Instagram – images
Linkedin
Snapchat
Pinterest
Messaging
Telephone
Webinars/ Google Hangouts
Email your subscriber list
Your goal is to get people toknow, like and trustyou and your brand through the content you are sharing with them.
As you share valuable content you will build rapport and establish authority with your audience within your niche .
Bottomline: Get your content out to your audience in order to get them to click on a link, like, share or comment on your post.
Remember the whole purpose of this step is to develop a relationship with our prospects, potential customers and/or business partners in order to sell to them.
STEP 3: Sell To Your Audience
The third and final step is selling to your audience.
You can offer to sell your products and services to your audience, only after you have built an audience and engaged that audience.
If you skip the first two steps you will encounter heavy resistance or rejection when you attempt to sell.

That’s the simple 3 step formula I learned that helped me boost my sales and the foundation of my marketing plan.
Oh before I forget…in the beginning of this post I asked a couple of questions
1. Which step do you believe is more important?
Answer: Step 1. Until you build an audience of people (potential prospects) that are interested in you FIRST.
2. Which step do most people concentrate on?
Answer: Step 3. Most people try to sell their products and services to any and everybody (3 foot rule) without first building an audience of followers. This is a HUGE mistake! Don’t think its true? Go on Facebook and look at all the people spamming their products on their personal page, in groups and through the messenger app.

There’s not a network marketer on the planet who bounces out of bed in the morning and says…
“Goody, goody, goody! I get to go strike up conversations with strangers and try to get them interested in my business!”
Or…
“Oh, hallelujah! I can’t wait to get to the phone and start calling people I don’t know!”
That’s not happening.
And yet, that’s the standard-issue training that you get from most network marketing companies today.
They’ll tell you that the way to build your business is to:
Make a list of all the people you know or have ever known
The Memory-Jogger Method: “Who do I know who’s an Accountant? Who do I know who’s a Baker? Who do I know who’s a Construction Worker?
The “Three Foot Rule”: strike up a conversation with anyone who comes within 3 feet of you!
The F.O.R.M method. Stands for Family, Occupation, Recreation and Message I don’t even want to tell you about this one. I’ll have nightmares tonight if I do….
You get the point!
This stuff is Jurassic Park Marketing.
It’s all leftover from decades ago when there was no internet….
…where people didn’t have computers in their houses….
….where there was no such thing as a smartphone….
….where “debit cards” weren’t invented yet and most people wrote checks for things they wanted to buy.
Hope you get that. I mean REALLY get that.
Right now, the likelihood that you’re reading this on your mobile phone or iPad is pretty good.
You might even be riding down the road at 60 mph.
And, no matter what kind of device you’re on, you could literally BUY A CAR from where you are right now if you wanted to.
And yet — despite all this amazing technology — the way most network marketers are taught to build their business is as old-fashioned as rotary-telephones and gas stations that close at 6pm.
This was the realization that made me wealthy in network marketing…
I spent years, spinning my wheels, in my network marketing business for TWO reasons.
And, if you’re not earning a six-figure income in your business, they’re probably the same two reasons that’s got you stuck.
Here they are:
I didn’t like what I was doing. I had to force myself to do it and pretended I enjoyed it.
The methods I was using didn’t work very well. They were out-dated, antiquated and didn’t match how people today wanted to live, work, buy things and earn money.
I could give you stories of all the stuff I hated.
Contacting people I haven’t talked to in years to see if they’d be interested in making money from home…. striking up conversations with strangers… calling 100 “leads” per day and leaving 96 voicemails …
It was stupid. And that stuff is even more stupid today.
The truth is that prospecting and doing in-person presentations is a waste of time for most people.
I’m not saying it doesn’t “work”. Heck, anything will produce a result if you do it enough times.
But my big breakthrough came from asking some hard questions.
Ask Yourself These Questions…
How much of your spending each month is done with a stranger you met at Starbucks while waiting to get your mocha? None.
How many of your monthly payments required you to go to some “home party” or “private business reception” to sit through a 2-hour meeting before making a decision? None.
How many of your decisions each month that involves having to spend time with a salesman in a 1-on-1 presentation? Unless you’re buying a car or a house, probably ZERO.
And finally, the BIG question:
If YOU don’t make decisions and spend your money that way, why are you asking your prospects to do it?
