Today I want to spend a little time talking about something I see quite often with network marketing representatives that have not taken time to fully develop their marketing skills.

If you have been in the network marketing industry as long as I have then you are sure to run across people that will pitch their multilevel marketing (MLM), direct selling, or network marketing business opportunity to you.

I get contacted almost daily by people asking me to take a look at their products or join their business opportunity.

Here is a small sample of non-edited (misspelled words and all) messages I have received in the past through social media or email:

quoteHey Charles, I just want to start off by saying thanks for accepting me I really appreciate it, ____here, I’ve been checking out your post for quite a while and I am amazed at you’re work, I’m working on a project called wakeupnow and I’m looking to partner up with business professionals, this goes well with your current opportunitie, there is incredible money on the table, are you open to other options outside of your current business?

And another…

quoteHello Charles glad to see you earning a good income working online. I would love to build you a 2nd income and I would do all the recruiting and building if you are busy with other projects. Just join and send me your link and I will place people under you. I can recruit enough people where you earn a minumum of $600-$2500 or more. I have built a few large teams. Watch this Video. Cost $100 to join

And one more,

What makes you different from the thousands of others promoting your business?

What are you offering me to join under you? Do you have some special training or a proprietary (marketing) system?

Think about it, 100 or marketers pitching the same or very similar lines to me daily. Stuff like this…

quote…create a 6 figure income, great leadership, stable company, ground floor opportunity, blah, blah, blah

But most of you are missing the point…

If I want to make the 6 figure income you keep telling me about with your company I could just join up under one of the leaders of the company, right?

The problem with this approach is that it attracts naive desperate people that also think there success lies in joining a good opportunity,

What Happens When You Do This?

…well, you may initially have some short term success by promoting your business opportunity to some gullible people.

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to build my business with a bunch of lazy, naive, gullible people that are not willing to do any work…

I want to build my business with motivated hardworking people and this strategy/approach doesn’t attract those type of people.

house-made-of-moneyWhen you use this approach you are building your business like a house of cards.

The slightest little thing can make it topple at any point.

Once these naive people realize that building a business is actually work, that it actually takes dedication, commitment, motivation or learning new skills…things will start to unravel,

…and once a card starts to fall very soon after the whole thing is going to come crashing down.

That is exactly what happens in most people’s organizations because they don’t attract the right people.

So have I described you? Are you this person?

This strategy is typical in the industry

…and we wonder why after 90 days people quit.

REMEMBER, in this business people join people not systems not until you TRULY get that I mean really get it then your business is going to suffer.

Today I want to take a look at the marketing process — an area I personally believe needs to be emphasized in our industry a lot more.

Unfortunately most people are taught wrong. They approach marketing as selling and selling as getting some unwilling prospect to buy something he or she doesn’t want or need.

Well if you are marketing your business this way, then be prepared to FAIL!

I personally have no interest in trying to sell something to someone who doesn’t want it, and I suggest you don’t either. True marketing is based on a simple – yet quite profound philosophy:

We’re looking for people…who are looking for what we have.

Put into more specific terms it means this: Our job is to identify qualified prospects — then put our marketing message in front of them. Give them enough information to make the right decision for them.

If that means they join your opportunity or buy your product, good. If it means they don’t, that’s good too. Your job is not to sell your opportunity or products to those that don’t need or desire them. It is to find the people who want what you have and give them enough information so they can decide if getting it from you is a fair exchange of value.

Don’t Sell – Sort

People arebad-salesman motivated by different reasons and many will surprise you. Those you think won’t...will. Those you think will…won’t.

Some people have legitimate reasons why they won’t become a customer or get involved with your company’s product, service or business opportunity, and that’s okay.

Sorting for Prospects

The most important thing for you to understand about any network marketing opportunity is that we are in the SORTING business, not the selling business!

When you are looking for qualified people to join your business opportunity, think of it as sorting apples or categories of people. There are four types and whether you are establishing your team through your own effort or helping agents you sponsored acquire new agents, you will always encounter people in these categories.

red-appleRED APPLES are motivated people who see the vision and once they hear your explanation, they immediately want to know how to get started. They are real easy to recognize by their enthusiasm. Your goal should  be to look for and work with Red Apples.

green-appleGREEN APPLES
are people who need or require considerable amount of time to make a decision. They will have to think about it or they may have to talk it over with their spouse. They ask for lots of literature and information. If you work with these people, you will find that they “spend” your time and time is your most valuable asset. Share marketing material carefully with these people and ask them to call you within 48hours. If they are interested they will call. If not, be prepared to let them go. It could be that the timing is just not right for them but they may be open in a few weeks or months. They may not be prospective agents now, but never take them out the loop. Get back to them from time to time. Green Apples can ripen into Red Apples.

rotten-appleROTTEN APPLES
are very easy to recognize. They are the people that tend to be negative or skeptical. They are not in need of any help or opportunities to better themselves. They may go out of the way to avoid contact with you. Not only can you recognize that they are not interested in any product or business opportunity but they will try to convince you that it doesn’t work or that its a SCAM! Stay away from these types of people! They will only drain your energy and rob you of your motivation and enthusiasm.

Rotten apples could be considered “dream stealers.” They are not only opposed to trying the service and/or the opportunity, but they also try to convince you that there is no opportunity for you.

Stay away from these people!! They will only drain your energy and enthusiasm. Remember, in reality there are no dream stealers. Only you can give up on your dreams.

But wait what about GOLDEN APPLES?

gold-appleGOLDEN APPLES are rare.

They are open minded people. They are the  type of people that instantly see the benefit in what you have presented them.

They may inquire about how to get involved before you can present it to them.

The main difference between successful representatives and unsuccessful representatives is what they do with their time. Spend 80% of your time sorting for and working with red apples, 20% of your time with green apples, and 0% of your time with the rotten apples. Remember that you can’t change people; you can only offer people an opportunity to change themselves.

The minute you recognize that someone is a rotten apple, don’t pursue them. Concentrate on the red apples.

REMEMBER: You are looking for motivated people (Red Apples). From time to time you will find a Gold Apple mixed in with Red Apples. Avoid Rotten Apples and be careful about spending too much time on Green Apples, but keep everyone informed from time to time. Situations Change

Today, I want to share with you an easy offline technique that I have been using to generate business leads for some time now.

Turn Your Junk Mail Into Leads

Junk mail can be annoying especially if you get more than a few pieces of it a day. American households average 10-20 junk mail offers in the mail each month.

Did you know . . .

  • 5.6 million tons of catalogs and other direct mail advertisements end up in US landfills annually.
  • 44% of junk mail is thrown away unopened, but only half that much junk mail (22%) is recycled.
  • The average American household receives 848 pieces of junk mail per household, equal to 1.5 trees every yearmore than 100 million trees for all U.S. households combined.
  • Americans pay 370 million annually to dispose of junk mail that does not get recycled.

But what if you knew of a way that you could turn those magazine subscriptions, sweepstakes mailers, surveys and annoying credit card offers from banks into business leads?

How many of you actually open all of your junk mail?

Although the statistics say, “44% of junk mail is thrown away unopened,” I honestly never  took the time to open my junk mail and look at the offers! I just ripped them up and immediately deposited them into the nearest trash can.

Who would have thought that your trash can is potentially a gold mine of FREE leads for your primary business or product!!!

I know that you have heard that expression…

How To Turn Your Junk Mail Into Business Leads In Three Steps

Step 1: Open Your Junk Mail And Grab The Postage Paid Envelope

You probably didn’t even realize that most of the junk mail includes a prepaid postage envelope in order for you to send information back to the solicitor. If you see these words “NO POSTAGE NECESSARY IF MAILED IN THE UNITED STATES” in the upper right-hand corner of the envelope then you are in business!

Step 2: Place Your Offer in the Postage Paid Envelope

So how can you get a free lead by using these junk mail envelopes?

Simple, just insert your business card or your company information [flyer, brochure, fact sheet, etc].

Here’s an example of what I put in the envelope along with my business or sizzle card,

Dear Friend,

Though we’ve never met, I specialize in helping people earn additional income from home. I’m always looking for sharp, motivated people who want to get ahead financially, aren’t afraid of hard work and don’t have time for a second job.

Would you please pass my card along to someone you feel qualifies and have them call the toll free number listed? If they are interested they can leave me a message and I’ll call them back to see if they qualify.

Step 3: Mail The Envelope

Once you place your offer in the envelope then seal it and put it back in the mail!


There will probably be some minimum wage worker on the other end that is paid to open these envelopes and will see YOUR AD and maybe even contact you!

What does that mean? It means one new exposure for you and your business or product. Within your own home, this means 15-25 free new exposures every month!

Want even more leads? Ask your friends or family or even your neighbors to save their pre-paid junk mail envelopes instead of throwing them away to give to you to use! This could literally mean hundreds of new exposures and leads each and every month!

The absolute best part about this technique is that its FREE to implement!

If you want to INSTANTLY kill your network marketing business then beg for business!

Inexperienced or improperly trained network and internet marketers doing any and everything they possibly can to get a new customer or sponsor someone into their business.

I am seeing this more and more and quite frankly it bothers me! Little do they know they begging for business is actually killing their business.

Not sure if you are begging for prospects and killing your business, here is a quick test:

Are you calling, emailing and soliciting your friends and family members to buy products from you or join your business?

Are you promoting your business on social media several times a day throughout the week?

Are you always posting before and after photos and making outrageous claims about results or income? Making false claims…turn $15 into $50,000 in two weeks

Well if you answered yes, to either one of those questions your network marketing future might be in trouble.

Not only are you killing your business by operating this way but your are also damaging your reputation.


If you want to be seen as an network marketing industry leader you must learn to protect your reputation.

Industry leaders brand themselves and use strategies like attraction marketing to build relationships up over time. They understand the importance of branding, reputation, and credibility.

They know these things build trust with their prospects. They know that reputation means everything – and they work hard to maintain theirs.

Industry leaders DO NOT beg for prospects!

They DO NOT pitch their products or business opportunity all the time on social media or to their close family or friends.

Why? Because they understand that most people really don’t care about their business nor their product even if the makeup, juices, vitamins, wraps, potions and lotions work.

Every single person you come across is NOT a prospect!

When you promote your business to any and everybody in the manner described above it just makes you seem desperate. What makes you think being desperate is an income strategy?

What you are doing comes from a lack of education and not understanding what it really takes to be a success in network marketing.

Unfortunately most if not all network marketing companies do a very poor job of properly educating and training the people that join their company. Many still teach tired old marketing methods that no longer work.

If you’re new to the industry, then your objective should be to educate yourself! A vast majority of your time should be going towards learning. If you’ve been in network marketing for a while, then its about increasing your value. But whatever you do don’t beg for prospects to join your business or buy your products.

Begging for prospects is a business killer.

I can’t believe how many people get started with Google Plus but will not take the time to set up the features of their profile page!



Not adding your picture to your profile page posts eerrrks me the most.

Why? Because it doesn’t require anything extra from you other than a few minutes of your time to……



So if you are new to Google + or a network marketing newbie (excusable) or just lazy (un-excuseable) I am going to show you:

Trust me people are not going to take you or your network marketing business seriously if you don’t take the time to set your Google + page up properly. Whether you realize it or not you are sending a clear message that you don’t really care!

Here is something to think about…

Let’s say you are advertising your business in several of the Google Plus communities every day. Asking people to join you as you take your team to the next level.

Are you getting any responses?


Probably NOT! Why would anyone want to join somebody they don’t know. You have not put up a photo. You have not told us anything about you in your ABOUT page. Think about it like this, would you let your kids befriend someone that doesn’t even display a photo of themselves?

Here Is What You Do


First, sign in to Google+. Place your cursor in the top left corner for the Google+ main menu and then click Profile.

  1. Hover your cursor over your current profile picture, then click  in the center.
  2. Upload a new photo, choose one from your albums, or take a new picture.
  3. Crop and edit your photo.
  4. Click Set as profile photo when you’re done.


It really is that simple!

Have you ever heard of the frog kissing principle story?

The frog kissing principle is something I heard a very long time ago and I thought I would share it for your personal use.

One ingenious networker applied the frog kissing principle to network marketing.

The Frog Kissing Principle Tale Goes Like This

•You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs to meet a prince.

•That’s the job and you’ve got to kiss’em.

•You can’t mail them a kiss.

•You can’t stay in the office and wait for them to hop in and kiss you.

•You can’t let advertising change them into princes.

•You can’t ask your secretary to kiss them.

•You can’t kiss the same one 40 times.

•You can’t spend all of your time in kissin’ school.

•You’ve got to spend time with frogs and you’ll find them out there in the marshes.

Then … when you find one … you’ve got to make contact. Remember, kissing is a contact sport. That is, if you really want to meet a prince.


In other words, in a high tech-high touch world, high touch wins every time. The rule in the sales world has always been that you have to expect a lot of no’s if you are expecting to get a yes.  In other words, you have to kiss a lot of frogs if you are going  to marry a prince.

Can you relate to the frog kissing principle story? Well if you are involved in network marketing you should be able to relate to this story. At some point to expand our business we must recruit or sponsor other frogs. We will face rejection but understanding how to persevere through it will help you reach your financial goals!

Final Thoughts

The most powerful tools today for building your business in spite of all this cutting edge technology are still word of mouth, the hug and the simple handshake. Don’t forget to focus on the fundamentals. Sure the Internet can be a very powerful medium for recruiting. But a remember network marketing is about relationships and the real friendships you make will last a lifetime in spite of where technology goes.
